Competition Bureau Fiddles while ...

Canada's Competition Bureau has been busy of late, releasing a flurry of announcements about battling home and garden store mergers, putting the kaibosh on Polyester Staple Fibre Price Fixing Conspiracies, and keeping big software companies like Oracle and PeopleSoft from harming competition. What are they doing about Microsoft?

Manitoba Government's IT Strategy: 404

The Office of Information Technology website has a list of links to a number of external documents. One of them is to a document rather pompously entitled "e-Friendly Manitoba. The Manitoba Government’s Strategy for Information and Communications Technology". Sounds like something fairly important to the Office of Information Technology, right? Think again...

A Department of Open Source Studies?

Just thought I'd share this proposal I've been working with the general public and get some feedback. I don't have any experience creating a such a proposal, but I hope that some people with more experience can contribute or offer suggestions. New Patent Watch

With the upcoming protests against new EU Patent Reforms I decided to visit the US patent office website and do a search for the word "click" and came up with 16841 results. I was interested to see this patent, # 6,609,105 described as a "System and method for providing access to electronic works" dated August 19, 2003 by Sander (Alexander) van Zoest of mp3.com fame.

I then did a google search on him and was quite surprised to find he is an open source supporter, perl, apache and freebsd programmer.

Slackware Live-CD

If you've ever been at a friend's house and wanted to show off a few of the things Linux can do, CD-based Linux distros are a great way to do it. I've tried Knoppix and ADIOS. There is even a special page at DistroWatch for CD distros. I just tried out a nice, lightweight package called Slackware Live-CD and it was very impressive.

It Ain't SPAM It's CLIC

The Canadian Linux Interest Coalition, that is. Backed by the folks from CLUE and some other Canadian LUGS, CLIC is dedicated to fighting the protection racket down at SCO. I couldn't be happier personally. There's even some media coverage...
